Arranged for brass band in the original key, this piece may be performed as a soprano cornet solo or sung as a soprano vocal aria. An optional cut between rehearsal marks G and J reduces the overall duration from 6m - 6m30s to around 4 minutes.
'Dinorah' is a French comic opera written in 1859 by prolific German Jewish composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. It premiered on 4 April 1859 and ran with some success until 1912 - often featuring a live goat! - but is now rarely performed as a complete work.
Ombre Legére is a virtuso soprano aria from the opening of the second act. In this famously demanding piece the lead character, Dinorah, has gone mad. She was spurned at the altar, has lost her pet goat, and has spent the best part of a year wandering the hills and forests alone. In this scene, the moon casts a shadow of her form and, thinking she has found a friend, she sings and dances with her shadow. Later she is struck by lightning, but survives, is reunited with her fiancé and all is forgiven. They marry and live happily ever after.
